On Christmas Eve morning, December 24, 2019, Wayne Allen Spreng, loving husband and father of two children, passed away at the age of 58. The way he died was just like the way he lived; he wrote his own rules. He fought authority and he paved his own way, and if you said he couldn’t do it, he made sure that he did. Because of his love of life and stubbornness until the end, he fought the battle against pancreatic cancer far longer than anyone believed he would.

Wayne was born on March 14th, 1961 in Loveland, CO and was a special gift to his parents, Edward and Barbara Spreng. Wayne is survived by his father, Edward Spreng, and his sister Teri Folker. He is also survived by his wife, Rhonda Spreng and two children, Jonathan Spreng (KayDe) of Lemoore, CA and Candace Lohr (Ross) of Johnstown, CO as well as many other nieces, nephews, and cousins. For many years, Wayne and Rhonda ran the feed mill in Johnstown, Johnstown Feed and Seed. Following the tragic fire that took the business, Wayne and Rhonda purchased Triad Tooling, Inc. in Westminster, CO which they still own today.

He lived 1000 years in the 58 calendar years we had with him. Most people wouldn’t be able to pack as many experiences as he did in the years God blessed him with. Wayne was an avid traveler, but loved nothing more than a weekend in the mountains with his family. Wayne also took pride in building and creating things for his family, including numerous metal art pieces that hang both in their homes and in his mountain home in Fraser, CO. After a lifetime of adventures, Wayne’s favorite place to be was around a firepit, sharing pizza and beer with the one’s he loved the most. He also couldn’t resist a good glass of Buffalo Trace Whisky mixed with a splash of Diet Mountain Dew. He loved many things, but he loved his family the most.

A funeral service will he held on Tuesday, December 31, 2019 at the United Methodist Church of Johnstown. A viewing will be held that morning starting at 9:30 a.m. with services following at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network at For more information on services and Wayne, please visit

Wayne's heart was in the right place, and he took time for the important things and never quit. I remember his constant concern for family and friends, and his herculean efforts in all he did. Heaven is richer and earth is poorer with his passing.

I was a classmate and friend of Wayne's at Roosevelt High (and several grades before High School as well). Although we did not keep in touch through the 40 years after graduation, I have thought about Wayne often. I read through the memorial statement and of course remember about Wayne's stubbornness, or rather his determination. Wayne and Rhonda always had a pursuit and a goal, and there wasn't much that got in their way that they could not overcome. I remember the photography business, and that he had a pilot's license. I also remember hearing that they took over the Johnstown grain mill and am not surprised to hear that they had another company for the past several years as well. Throughout those accomplishments, Wayne was also a sturdy rock for anyone around him, as I am sure that the family knows. Wayne and I recently connected again, after the 40th Reunion. We shared several texts about kids, family, and unfortunately about his illness. I regret that it took me so long to reconnect, but am grateful to have shared with him recently and hope that he enjoyed some memories and another look over his life full of accomplishments as he brought me up to date.

I remember getting together in the basement at Wayne's parents' house in high school once. I played drums while Wayne was playing guitar, and we kept playing the song "wipeout" over and over. His parents must have thought we were making such an awful racket, but we sure had a lot of fun with it. But that is not all. I mostly think of Wayne when I have my Mountain Dew with lunch. We used to sit together in the lunch room in High School, and Wayne had a Mountain Dew every day with his lunch. He loved that stuff, I am sure, because I just read that he still enjoyed it with Buffalo Trace Whisky (even though the Mountain Dew is just a splash). Oh, and I noticed that he now uses the diet version. That's okay, because I am now drinking diet caffeine-free Mountain Dew these days! Can you believe that they make such a thing?!!! It really is the flavor that I like, and I know what Wayne was going for all those years ago.

I also have an old photo from December 1984 to share. At this time, Wayne and Rhonda had a photography business and my parents hired them to take our family photo at a time when my family was all together for Christmas that year. We were not quite all gathered though, and Rhonda might remember that my Brother's Son was not with us. So they took the family photo with a filter at one corner, then later added a photo of Lee so that it would represent a complete family photo. Anyway, at the end of the photo shooting, Wayne, Rhonda, and our good friend Mark Mellon hung out together for a bit. During that time, this photo was captured of Wayne and Mark, sitting by our fireplace (this was the background for the family photo). I always liked this photo, showing both of them laughing and joking around. This is how I will always remember Wayne.

I am deeply sorrowed by such a great loss and can only rely on the knowledge that he is now without pain.
