Obituary

Donice Jean Meylor, 93, of Longmont, Colorado, passed away March 1, 2020.

Donice was born on a farm near Brookville, Kansas, to Nels W. and Bernadette (nee Dinkler) Johnson on July 8, 1926. She attended Brookville grade school and high school. Donice earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics from Marymount College, Salina, Kansas, in 1947. In 1948 she completed her dietetic internship at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio. As a registered dietician, she was employed at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri; Mercy Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland; and Roosevelt Hospital in New York City.

Following this employment, she entered the convent of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Concordia, Kansas. Her religious life was spent at Marymount College, Salina, Kansas, where she taught home economics and was Dean of Students. During this time, she earned a Master’s degree in education from the University of Notre Dame (1962) and a Master’s degree in Foods and Nutrition from Pennsylvania State University (1971).

Upon leaving the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1972, she was employed at the University of Missouri—Columbia in dietetics.

In 1976 she married Thomas E. Meylor of Madison, South Dakota. That was the beginning of a journey which saw them living in Madison, South Dakota; Garden City, Kansas; Brighton, Colorado; Salina, Kansas, and eventually back to Colorado and the mountains they loved so much. Donice continued her dietetics employment and worked for the WIC program in Kansas.

Donice enjoyed country rides, birdwatching, and Rocky Mountain National Park. Donice and Tom spent five summers at Yellowstone National Park working as concession employees. While in Longmont, Donice enjoyed bridge and quilting and the friendships associated with these pastimes. Donice’s last years (along with Tom) were spent at Bross Street Assisted Living where she loved to play Scrabble and put puzzles together.

Donice is preceded in death by her husband, Thomas (Tom) Meylor; her sister Mary Louise Reck and her husband William; her brother Max Johnson and his wife Gwen; sister-in-law Bernadette Meylor Eagle and her husband Bill; brother-in-law Jerry Meylor and his wife Irene; sister-in-law Sandra Meylor.

Donice is survived by her five step-children Elizabeth Meylor of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Dominic Meylor, MD, of Boulder, Colorado; Priscilla Nelson (Jon) of Corvallis, Oregon; Joseph Meylor of Alameda, California; and Susan Strawbridge (Steve) of Longmont, Colorado; grandchildren, Sam, Katie, and Caleb Nelson, Martha and Sam Strawbridge, and Max Meylor; step-grandchildren, Sami and Ben Alemania; brothers-in-law, Stanley (Loretta) of Citrus Heights, California, and Daniel Meylor of Westminster, California; brother Bernard D. Johnson (Gail) of Topeka, Kansas, and their five children Matt (Denise), David (Marcia), Beth Russell, Maria Sheets, and Carrie (Jeff) Rombeck; and niece Ruth (Dave) Stemler of Longmont, Colorado, and their children Sara (Mikael Wagner) Stemler and Ben Stemler; special friends Shanta and Howard Wayne of Sunrise, Florida, and their children, Madison and Christopher; and many grand nieces and nephews and cousins.

Donice was a pure joy to be around. Her smile, laugh and quick wit brought sunshine to Bross.
She will be greatly missed.

Donice was a beloved resident at Bross Street Assisted Liviing, where she lived with her husband Tom for 5 years. She never failed to have a smile ready, and a kind word or a funny saying. She lit up any room with her enthusiasm for life, and the simple things, especially the beautiful flowers, trees, squirrels, and the cloudless blue skies we so often enjoy here in Longmont. She will be greatly missed by all, and it was our pleasure and our privilege to serve her and her family.
