Dan Rushing of Longmont passed away November 13, 2019 at the Hover Community Greenhouse Tudor Home in Longmont. He was 73.

He was born February 22, 1946 to Thomas and Selma (Woods) Rushing in Denver Colorado. He had no siblings, but his home was shared with his loving “Gramps.” Dan graduated from Cherry Creek High School in 1964, received an Associates Degree from Mesa Junior College and earned a BA in Education from the University of Northern Colorado in 1970.

He married Mary Brown on July 31, 1971 at Montview Presbyterian Church in Denver. They moved to Longmont in 1972 where they resided until his death.

A student teaching assignment in 1969 in the Fort Lupton School district led to his career teaching elementary Physical Education for thirty-one year at Butler Elementary School in Fort Lupton. He also coached football and track at Fort Lupton High School and was the athletic trainer during his final ten years. He was very proud of the athletic training program which he initiated there.

After Dan retired in 2001 he continued to enjoy golfing, fishing, hunting and horseback riding for many years. Attaining monikers of “Hubby,” “Daddy,” “Coach Rush,” “Papa” and “Loyal Friend,” were his greatest goals. Family trips to San Diego and the family cabin in Allenspark, Co. brought him much joy in recent years.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Dan is survived by his wife Mary, son Thomas Rushing and wife Mary, daughter Julie Gabler and husband Aaron, grandchildren Thomas and Taryn Rushing and Lily and Logan Gabler, brother-in-law Charles Brown and several cousins.

A memorial service will be held Monday, December 16 at 10:30 at CENTRALongmont Presbyterian Church. Cremation entrusted to Ahlberg Funeral Chapel and Crematory. Memorial contributions may be made to Parkinson Association of the Rockies. Share condolences at

When you think about Fort Lupton RE 8 Schools there are quite a few names and great teachers that taught, lived, and loved Fort Lupton. There are way too many to name that had far reaching impacts on this community. Deeper than just school.

Dan Rushing was one of those people that made an ever lasting impact on the future of many people. I had the opportunity to know him and spend 12 years in the RE 8 schools with him as a student. He was the most inspiring coach for my wife Jeanie Gabel who went on to become a two time state track champion under his guidance. Not a better person to coach, educate, teach, and provide life lessons. Not everybody got a ribbon back then and he made sure your knew it. You earned it. We are a better community because of dedicated and committed people like Coach Rushing. Thank you and god bless Coach Rushing and his family.

He was a wonderful man. He helped my little sister and I thur every knee surgery and pushed us in rehab. I remember graduating and then FL got a TRUE training room ALL because of HIM!

I was deeply saddened to hear of Rush's passing. He was by far the greatest and most influential mentor I have ever had. His pep talks and motivational stories kept me going through my difficult times in high school. His laugh was contagious and brightened up the room. He was never afraid to tell you the way things were and what you could do about them. My biggest regret is losing touch with him and not making sure he knew how much he meant to me and the impact he had in who I am today. I'm grateful that not just myself but all of the students had the opportunity to have him in our lives. Thank you for everything Rush, you'll forever be cherished by all that knew you.
