He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 57 years, Carol, his son and daughter in law, Chris and Sheryl Bartlett, and his daughter and son in law Maria and Evan Borg. He was blessed with seven beloved grandchildren: Emily, Sophie, John Philip, Hayden, Griffin, Katelyn and Kelly. Our German foreign exchange student, Hans Christian Kuhner, joined our family in 1984.
Cliff was born in Iowa City, Iowa to John and Gladys Bartlett. He was the oldest of four children. Cliff is also remembered by his siblings and their spouses, brother Lowell and sister in law Liz, brother Russell and sister in law Connie, and sister Luanne and brother in law Gayle. From early years on, family was a priority and he has enjoyed numerous trips and get togethers with his siblings!
Cliff graduated from Tipton HS in 1956 in IA. He earned a BA degree from University of Northern Iowa in Physical Education and Biology in 1961, and a Master’s degree in Physical Education from University of Northern Colorado in 1965. During his teaching career he taught physical education, math, life and earth science in Oelwein, IA and Greeley, CO.
He loved and played sports and always had time to play with his kids. Cliff attended every sporting event of his children as they were growing up. He was so proud of his each grandchild and attended as many of their activities as possible! He coached soccer, baseball, and swimming. Cliff also refereed basketball and wrestling. He was the starter for the highschool state championship swim and dive meets for over 20 years.
Cliff will be remembered for his love of family and friends, and passion for life. He also had a generous spirit, personal integrity, compassion, and courage. Cliff had a witty sense of humor, and welcoming smile. He was respected for his leadership in education and was trusted by his peers, students and parents. Cliff played golf, was an avid reader, and a world traveler.
Cliff’s ashes will be buried in the Manly, Iowa cemetery next to his parents. In lieu of flowers, donations honoring Cliff may be sent to The Anschutz Cancer Center at UCHealth
