Obituary for Katrina M. Downey

Katrina M. Downey
Katrina Mai Downey passed away August 23, 2014 at Longmont United Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. She was 49 years old.

She was born August 4, 1965 in Mölndal, Sweden to Leif and Bonnie (Schnebly) Bilen. Tina spent her early childhood in Sweden, moving to Silver Spring, MD in 1974 where she competed in gymnastics and cross country. The family moved to Englewood, CO in 1983. Tina graduated from Denver Christian High School in 1984, where she played clarinet in the band and met her future husband. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, and a teaching certificate from Colorado State University in 1988.

She married Neal A. Downey on June 20, 1992 at Our Savior’s Reformed Church in Lakewood, CO. They moved to Longmont and have made it home since their marriage.

Tina taught at Turner Middle School in Berthoud for nine years after graduating from CSU. In 1997 with the birth of their son Jacob and later second son Luke, she focused her attention on being a loving homemaker and mother.

The Downey family were members of Grace Evangelical Free Church, where Tina was active in many aspects of ministry, including women’s ministries and teaching Precepts Bible study classes.

Tina enjoyed writing, a talent she put to use writing poetry as well as blogging in her own personal blog “Life is Good”. She was a coordinator for the “A to Z Challenge,” an international online writing competition every April in which participants write something each day using the next letter of the alphabet. She enjoyed camping with her family and knitting. Tina was a good friend with a great listening ear. For her boys and their friends, she was a neighborhood favorite, and they dubbed her the “helmet police.”

Tina is survived by her husband Neal and two sons Jake and Luke, parents Leif and Bonnie Bilen, sister Melinda Thornberry (Ty), brother Tom Bilen (Molly), aunt Sharon Cappeluti, uncle John Schnebly and several cousins; parents-in-law Art and Gwen Downey, sister-in-law Anne Jordan and her children; brother-in-law Drew Downey, nieces and two nephews; and preceded in death by her nephew Evan Leif Bilen.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30am Saturday, August 30, 2014 at Grace Evangelical Free Church in Longmont. Cremation entrusted to Ahlberg Funeral Chapel and Crematory. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Downey Education Fund for Jake and Luke. Visit to share condolences.
